Apéro believes in giving back to the community and making a difference. With fashion being a predominantly female industry it was a no brainer when we decided to donate 5% of all of our online sales to helping women. We chose the Women’s Community Shelters, an Australian based charity that provides refuge and practical help for women who are homeless or subject to domestic abuse. Our partnership with Women’s Community Shelters has been incredibly special and important to us. For Apero this is about women wanting to make a difference, about lending a hand to other women and children who need assistance, and about being a voice to incite change.

From the early stages of Apero Label still in her living room, head designer/co-owner Rachel Smith felt that generosity had to be rooted in Apero’s values and principles. With the desire to support a good cause, Rachel researched high and low to find a charity making a significant impact, and that’s when she found Women’s Community Shelters.

Keep reading to find out more about the incredible work the Women’s Community Shelters does for women and communities across Australia and how you can help.

What is Women’s Community Shelters?

Women’s Community Shelters works with communities to establish shelters and provide secure accommodation and a safe environment for women at risk of homelessness or domestic violence.

They also provide support services such as counselling; health care; legal assistance and education; food and essentials; and help women rebuild self-esteem so that they have a chance to begin a new life. The amazing work of the shelter is designed to give these women a second chance to rebuild and live safely and happily.

Shelter operations would not be possible without the generosity in donations from the community. Active volunteer involvement, professional skills, in-kind support, and donations have helped women and children across Australia. To date over 321 women and children were assisted through crisis accommodation and outreach programs and 16,000 bed nights were provided per annum. There are currently 6 permanent shelters established, and 4 in the pipeline. With the ongoing support from Women’s Community Shelter 70% of clients have moved into independent living.
